Join us for Rhythm Sticks! An evening of music, maths and science.

Through panel discussion, demonstrations, and musical performances, we will explore the scientific basis of rhythmic synchronisation in music. The panel will consist of researchers and artists, discussing the process of synchronising in music performance, the feeling of “locking in” to rhythms, and the cognitive and mathematical models we can use to understand these feelings and processes. There will be a multimedia showcase of artistic work and a practical demonstration of the physics of synchronisation. 

Artist bios:

NikNak, A storyteller in her own right, NikNak is devoted to developing her unique practice as a DJ & Turntablist, sound artist/composer, producer, tutor, sound engineer and radio presenter.

Graham Dunning‘s work explores sound as texture, timbre and something tactile, drawing on bedroom production, tinkering and recycling found objects. In this Mechanical Techno live set he uses a standard DJ turntable as a sequencer, sound source and ramshackle engine, building a spinning contraption in real-time to make wonky and weird dance music. 

Sic’Nis {an acronym for Succeed-In(g) Impossible Circumstances Needs Intellectual Strength} is a confident and energetic MC, Songwriter, Sound Engineer, Radio Host/Producer and Mentor who has performed throughout the UK and Europe. Covering many genres, Sic’Nis combines the art of witty, thought-provoking story-telling with a plethora of uniquely thrilling, captivating flows.

Simon Peter Green launches his Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine artist-in-residency project. His photographs deconstruct the science of DJ Beatmatching and convey a message about the magical influence DJs have on the dance floor. Simon was previously an international tour manager with Wu-Tang Clan, Duke Dumont, Pusha T, Maya Jane Coles, Lethal Bizzle, Ty, Rhoda Dakar, and many others.
